The Sims have been around for a few years now and it is still the top selling PC game all over the world. Why is it so popular? What is it about the sims that is so intriguing that it keeps millions of people in front of their computer screens for hours and hours at a time? Are you addicted to the Sims? How do you know if you are one of the millions that are?
You know you might be addicted if.......
- you find yourself thinking about the sims even when you are not playing the game.
- you have a dream and everyone in the dream is a sim.
- you are driving around and you see a house that you want to build in your Sims game
- you look at people around you where ever you are and wonder if you can make a sim out of them
- you are supposed to be in bed by 12:00 am and you find yourself still up at 3:00 in the morning
- you build your own house and everyone in your family is a Sim
- you are really tired and you imagine a red bar over your head
- you find you know all the lyrics to the songs that play in your game
- you find yourself talking simlish
What the critics are saying about the sims addiction
Some say that it is the experience of playing God that is a major selling point of the game. If you are one of the many people who play the sims you would have to agree that you may be the one to make and influence the lives of your sims, but you are really the one who is controlled. It's so easy to play the sims and forget the time. On more than one occasion I would find myself so in grossed with the Sims that I was up until 3:00 in the morning. There definitely is something to be said about living someone else's life and being the one that is in control of everything that happens. There is more to the Sims life though. Along with being able to play with their lives, you can also become an architect and an interior designer. You can become whatever your heart desires. You can be as rich as you want and if you want to own your own clothes store or restaurant? The Sims have it. It's like being able to live out your fantasies even though in real life it would never happen.
Is it wrong to be an addict?
I once heard someone call the Sims "A Doll House Soap Opera" if you have ever watched a soap on TV then you know the addiction they can have in someones life. I watch soaps on TV and play the Sims. Is it really so bad? what is wrong with taking some time during the day and doing something that requires no thinking at all. I love the Sims and I say have fun but don't forget you have a real life too.

I think that the sims are addicting because you have complete control of what they can and cannot do
I- yes- am one of those people. But, if it's like, four in the afternoon, and I want to start playing, I usually limit myself from a one hour to two hour playing range. That's it for the day because my eyes feel like they are going to pop out of my head. But, don't get me wrong, I've had days where I've played for nine hours and yes, I thought about the Sims ALL DAY LONG after that. (I was "sick" that day) So, yes, I limit myself, but sometimes it gets out of control. I know it doesn't seem addicting to some people, but it is to ALOT. lol :{
the sims 3 is tooaddicting and i want to know how tostop.i thinkthatwe are so addicted because it has something todo with being in control and we are so easily entertained. could you tell me how to stop?
every time i play the sims for a really long time, the next day is even worse. i can't stop thinking about it!! and its really bad because i can only play the sims on my moms laptop and she doesn't like it when i go on a sims frenzy. so sometimes i steal her computer at night and play..
but eventually i get bored of the sims and dont play it for a really long time. then after like 2 months i get hooked again for like a week and the cycle starts all over again.
its quite strange... i dont know what to do...
Huh. I'm addicted too. I guess I have to control myself so that my eyesight won't get worse too much b'cause looking at the monitor for hours.
IT is addicting...if any of u want to kno how to beat the addiction...just play another game my addiction breaker is world of warcraft :)
I love the Sims 3 its so awesome! I'm totally addcited to it, but I limit myself to only playing in the weekends, so i can focus on school. But still I think about it everyday :)
I hav OCD, so its even harder for me to get off it, i become so obsessed

I'am soo addicted that wen i ws supposed to b studying for exams i like was playing the sims, and i like would lock myself in my room and stay up there for three to five hrs during the day unless i ahve school... which means that i was thinking about it all damn daii. The worst thing about was that i had a nightmare about not being able to get the sims 3 ambitions!
any help on how i can break this addiction - and not by playing another game :P

I am addicted to the sims in every possible way. The only way to break this habbit is not to play it for 3 weeks and then you go insane i know cause i'm at that stage now cause i'm grounded
I'm an ex sims 2 addict,I'd be so in grossed with sims some days that I'd play nonstop from about 9 'till 10 or 11 in the afternoon, I also spent about a day gettin loads of custom content, i always had to have the best clothes, best furniture, best makeup, it was chemical. Please do NOT play this game or you could get addicted too.

The sims is amazing...Even tho i get yelled at for staying on the computer all day by my parents but when i get into it i can't stop playing. And on tht list i do everything other then the simlish speaking i hum out the music and even my sister who doesn't play is starting too it's tht bad :D

i love sims-i have played sims 2 on both the ps2 and on the gameboy advanced an then last november i played it on the pc at my friends house-and now i'm getting it from another friend and right now i dont even have it but its all i can think about and its distracting me from my summer school WHAT DO I DO!?!? i can't focus on anything i'm supposed to i'm already planing what i'm going to name them, what they're gonna wear, and already drawing the layouts to the houses i'm gonna make I NEED HELP!
I gave up playing Sims for good. I had to remove the game from the computer and sell the the cds. I feel so relieved.
At one point I noticed I wasn't even having fun anymore. I was just playing really compulsively, endlessly trying to reach the next goal. I played at least twelve hours a day, some days even more. Yes, really!
I don't have other addictions and I don't play anything else.
Many are talking about their obsession/addiction with Sims in a humorous way. In my opinion there's nothing funny about the addictivity of the game. It's seriously bad for you!
the bit about when you go past a house and want to build it :0 that is me so badly!! but then i love interior design sometimes i make people and build a house then turn it off lol
Anyone else played Sims for months and months or even years? Result: no social life, no love life, no education, no work. What made you decide to quit?
I started playing at about 4pm and have only just finished playing (22:49) and I have a GCSE tomorrow! I have been addicted since I first started Sims 2. Sims 1 wasn't that great.
See I love the,but my friends and family find it boring some how.....but I am completely addicted to it I just can't stop playing it. I have ADHD along with many other problims I don't think you want me to write a list but I have saw that people with my problims find the sims more of a life style since my life is.....well,nothing really I have no talant and I seem to hurt people mentaly without meaning to so I find the sims as my way out of my life.I don't know if you share the same view but I would love to know.......?
I can't stop playing the sims3... I have it running almost constantly and even watch movies picture in picture while playing. My life consists of eating, drinking, Mary- Jane, and of course the undeniable addiction that comes with designing after a toke or two!!!... wow there's no better stress reliever in my books!
I'm so hooked on it right now!!! I've actually learned to control some of my sim time from about 5 hrs a day to about 2. I have a tendency to get bored with the families really fast, so maybe that helps. But it's so much fun you can't help it!! I'm going to go play right now!!!
im am addicted to sims 3 sooo bad that my mom took the laptop away from me for 3 weeks and on the first hour of no simmies i broke many things and told my mom that i was gonna run away and live in africa if she didnt give me the laptop instead she it be good for you and it did when she gave me back my laptop i didnt play it for 5 days until my cousion came over and started to play it and then right back to addiction :I
I got sims 3 when it came out, played it all weekend every weakend for about a month, over night and all.. i now have to wear glasses to see the board at school, its crap so limit your self.

Omg I'm so addicted! Even when I'm not playing I think about playing it and what I'm gonna do next in the game. Hopefully it will fade after a while but its so easy to kill time with!

Sims are kinda dissapointing. I wish they could fist each other.
Sims is AMAZING! I find myself pplaying it for 3-4 hours at a time. You dont even notice how fast time's going by.
Whenever i'm driving - or should i say my mum's driving - around the strrets i always think, "im going to build thast house" or "i made something like that the other day" etc.
Hopefully this addiction will fade after a while, as i have been playing it since sims 2, but i love it and it is minimized on my laptop at this very moment.
I hope to make my own game like this in the futre, me and my cuz have started working on it already.

I am SUPER addicted. I had the Wii version first and I got addicted to that one. Then I got the pc versions and stopped playing the Wii one after I realized how lame it is compared to the pc ones. Sims is awesome! I literally played that game my whole spring break. Wake up at 8:00 and play till 9:30, same with one weekend! Imm sooooooo addicted that in school I day dream about my sims and in 6th period of school I'm almost dying of excitement cause of how close I am to playing it. Best game evaaaa!! (:
I laughed out loud at the "you sometimes find yourself talking simlish" because i really do lol and i have memorized some of the songs in simlish as well. I wonder about myself sometimes ROFL.

God, i'm so addicted to sims that i keep dreaming of them and last night i woke up with an unbelievable headache my heading was bubbeling like my brain was on fire, then i puked up, i thought i was dying, but apparantly on the ds warning it says 1 in 4000 people can get bad physical reactions if on it too much some even trigger epilepcy. has anyone else had similer problems? trust me to be 1 in 4000....

I think sims is addicting because you can be almost anyone with any job you can be who you want to be fast but real life you have to work hard or you can be some retard insane dude for the fun of it haha like they say theres no limits

I litteraly had to break my sims 3 cd's in half so it wouldnt control my life anymore. I WONT EVER OWN ONE AGAIN.. ITS WAY TO ADDICTING. There are too many things to do on the game. A person can last up to hours and hours playing. Good luck to those who are addicted. But if it ever came to a point that it was controling your life, please take my advice and break your cd!
I have found myself going on my computer to do online homework, and after I finish homework I reward myself for finishing my homework and I end up putting the Sims on and playing it for hours after I am done. The problem with this is, I play the Sims before I do any homework, and I don't get a lot of homework done! Now I keep the Sims out of my computer and out of the room all together. My wife hides it so I don't play it all day on the weekend. That way I have to spend time with her and our son lol. Sims 3 can ruin your real life if you don't be careful! She likes the Sims too, so she understands how it can control you like that lol.
I play 15 hours a day :( and I gained 5 pounds... Now I weigh 92 pounds :( I'm only 13 and hate real life... Sims is my only happiness and wen im in skool I can't think cuz all I think of is sims and wat I'm Gunna do with them.
I love Sims! I don't play obsessivly, but i always want to. I have to stop myself from playing all the time, and i find i play about two whole hours a day. I can't beleive my little world became a lifestyle. I just can't make myself stop sometimes, and rarely caNn stop until i've fufilled myself or 'my aspiration meter is good'. With this stuff, i just want to work on my pregnant teens while i can be losing the nine pounds that'll make me a normal weight. I've always had a little problem with weight, and playing God to little people isn't helping.
I play the Sims 2, and I'm totally addicted. I don't want to shut it out of my life or anything (it's fun!) but I need to learn to pace myself. I do online highschool classes, so I can't really make my computer off-limits to myself during the day, and at night, especially if I haven't played much during the day (a day when I've actually been productive in my school work,) then I REALLY want to play at night. I struggle with procrastination and focus issues in general, but when I get addicted to doing something particularly distracting-- like the sims-- I have a harder time. The good news is I also have a pattern that happens every time I get obsessed with something new: if I'm feeling totally caught up in the thing, I just go a day without it and try not to think about it. For some reason, if I go to do the thing in question the next day, not only does it not seem as obsessive, it's actually a complete turn off. So, if I just go a day with no simming, I usually end up not wanting to play at all.
ok just have your mom and/or dad take it away and do not let them give it back intill the next day. try to find some stuff to do play a board game,go for a run, go over to your firends house,play out side i used to be addicted and still struggle right now i only play 1 hour a day. just do homework and studdy and workout before
I love The Sims 3...I've been playing since The Sims 1! The Sims is a big addiction for me, but it's better then doing drugs and The Sims helps me not think about doing all that bad stuff in reality.
The Sims are awesome! The only reason I'm not playing it right now is because I'm trying to cut down on my playing time... I was playing 14 hours a day for weeks (I'm on holiday ftw!). When I first got it, I played for close to 30 hours straight.
As for how to limit yourself... Decrease your playing time slowly. Have a target time where you have to stop and set several alarms so you're more aware of the time passing. And then spend time on another hobby instead. For a start, you could limit your playing quite a lot, and then have a "Sims Binge Day" every week, where you play as long as you like. That might help you be more motivated to stick to the limit.

I was an addict. But that was when i was in primary school because i had NO homework but now i;m in year 7 at high school i've got tons :(.
When i was addicted i was only addicted for about 4 weeks to 5 weeks and then i got fed up so i deleted it from my computer thinking i was never going to go back on it :) But about 3 weeks later I because sim insane and wanted to go back on it. but i couldn't because it was on my fathers computer and he had taken it away with him to work abroad :). when he came back i re-downloaded it and what ever and then got fed up again to i deleted it. lol and he took it away and then i wen't loopy for sims so i re-downloaded it and then got fed up and deleted it and now I got my own laptop i can download it evan though i'm going mental cause of STUPID HIGH SCHOOL
I am addicted to sims! I am in secondary school (high school) and I get soo much homework that I never get I chance to play over weekdays, but once (on a weekday) I got up at 5am and played sims for 2hrs. basically I only play over weekends but for 4hrs. Why am I addicted?? I do everything in the list and I have these dreams that im playing sims!.
I mean soon you will have little or no time to play like me used to play alot in hs but focus more on school i wasnt that focused but i did get through now im juggling all these things at once go to work go to school and hit the gym i hardly even have time for my gf sad i kno but youll have the weeknd

I started playing TS when I was like 9 and now 4 years later im hooked to TS3 :p
When I first got the game I couldn't stop playing it but then I took a brake for a while and now i am back on the sims drug.....
I play sims 3 all day everyday on holidays and weekends. i once had a six pack but ive gotten really unfit and my back posture is really bad..
i want to quit playing it forever but i paid so much money for it (i have all the expanion packs but no stuff packs)

i love the sims im not addicted though i have a real life. But it is fun to live in a dream world.
Im so addicted to the Sims 3, I save up to buy all the expansion packs and spends hours playing and expandin my family generations. I seriously can play all day.

Well, I think indeed Sims 3 it's an addicting game. But like Sims there are lots of addicting games, you just have to educate yourself to shutdown when it's time.
